What Happened at Camp Lejeune?

Located in North Carolina, Camp Lejeune is an active U.S. Marine Corps base that allegedly had a contaminated water supply between 1953 and 1987. During that 34-year period, it’s believed that more than one million people could have been exposed to contaminated drinking water.

Experts say the contamination involves volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as tetrachloroethylene (PCE or PERC), trichloroethylene (TCE), benzene, and vinyl chloride. These VOCs leeched into the ground water as a result of base operations and business activity nearby. There is believed to be a link between the presence of these VOCs in the base’s water supply and the development of adverse health conditions among a variety of people.

Who Is Affected by the Camp Lejeune Water Contamination?

Anyone who lived or worked on the base may be affected by water contamination. This includes U.S. military personnel, their family members (spouses and children), and civilian employees.

Children of those who lived and/or worked at Camp Lejeune may also be affected by birth defects caused by contamination even if the children themselves didn’t live on the base.
